Choosing the wrong thread rolling machine is an expensive mistake. Buy a machine too small and you bottle-neck your production when orders grow. Buy one with more capability than you need and you overpay — and then struggle with setup complexity. After 65 years of building and selling thread rolling machines from Ludhiana, Hardev Hydraulics has helped hundreds of fastener businesses make this decision correctly. Here is the framework we use.
The Three Machine Types Explained
1. Flat Die Thread Rolling Machine (M2–M8)
The flat die machine uses two hardened flat dies — one stationary, one reciprocating — to roll small fasteners as they pass between the dies. It is the highest-speed option in the range: 150–320 pieces per minute, making it the machine of choice for small fastener mass production. Motor requirement is typically 4.0 kW.
Best for: Small screws, machine screws, set screws, self-tapping screws in the M2–M8 range. Very high volumes. Ideal for bolt-head forming plants that feed blanks into a flat die machine as the final threading step.
Limitations: Only for small diameters. Thread length is limited by die length. Not suitable for longer studs or bars.
2. Two Roll Thread Rolling Machine (M3–M45)
The Two Roll machine positions two cylindrical die rolls opposite each other. As the die rolls rotate and infeed radially, the workpiece blank rotates between them and the thread form is impressed across its full length in a single plunge cycle. Hardev Hydraulics' Two Roll Type operates with 36 metric tons of hydraulic force and produces 20–65 pieces per minute — well-suited to the bulk of India's fastener industry.
Best for: M3 to M45 hex bolts, flange bolts, studs, foundation bolts, U-bolts, eye bolts. The dominant choice for Punjab's fastener and auto-component industry. Handles mild steel, alloy steel, stainless and brass.
Limitations: Maximum M45. For larger diameters (M50+), thread concentricity from a two-point contact system is inferior to a Three Roll arrangement.
3. Three Roll Thread Rolling Machine (M10–M75)
The Three Roll (planetary) machine wraps three die rolls at 120° around the workpiece, applying balanced radial force from three contact points simultaneously. This gives superior concentricity for large-diameter work, and the machine handles threads up to M75 with a 22-metric-ton hydraulic system producing 15–45 pieces per minute.
Best for: Large studs, anchor bolts, tie rods, scaffolding props (M36–M52), jack prop outer tubes, mining bolts and rebar threading in the M10–M75 range. Essential for infrastructure and construction component manufacturers.
Limitations: Higher setup complexity than Two Roll for small-diameter work. For M3–M9, a Flat Die or Two Roll machine is more economical.
The Four-Question Decision Framework
Work through these four questions in order to identify your correct machine:
Question 1: What is your largest thread size?
- Up to M8 → Flat Die is sufficient; Two Roll also works from M3
- M9 to M45 → Two Roll is the primary choice
- M46 to M75 → Three Roll is required
- Mix of small and large → Consider one of each, or a Two Roll with Three Roll upgrade path
Question 2: What materials do you thread?
- Mild steel (EN8, EN9) → All three machine types handle this easily
- Alloy steel (EN19, EN24, 42CrMo4) → Two Roll or Three Roll with adequate hydraulic force
- Stainless steel 304/316 → Requires sufficient hydraulic force; Two Roll handles up to M30 in SS comfortably
- Aluminium or brass → Flat Die or Two Roll; lower force required
- High-tensile (Grade 10.9, 12.9 blanks) → Two Roll or Three Roll; rolling before heat treatment preferred
Question 3: What is your daily production requirement?
- Below 500 pcs/day → Any machine type can serve this volume
- 500–5,000 pcs/day → Two Roll or Flat Die depending on size
- 5,000–20,000 pcs/day → Two Roll with auto-feed, or Flat Die for small screws
- Above 20,000 pcs/day → Multiple machines or Flat Die with high-speed auto-feed
Question 4: Do you need automatic feeding?
Manual feed (operator places blank by hand) keeps machine cost lower and is practical for mixed-size production runs where frequent changeovers occur. Automatic vibratory bowl feeding suits single-size, high-volume production. Both feed methods are compatible with all three Hardev Hydraulics machine types — we can configure the machine to your preference.

Why Buy from Hardev Hydraulics?
Beyond the machine specifications, the manufacturer relationship matters. Hardev Hydraulics has been building thread rolling machines in Ludhiana for over 65 years. We manufacture all major components in-house at our Industrial Area Phase-2 factory, giving us full quality control. We stock spare parts for 10 years after sale, our engineers handle installation and commissioning at your facility, and Punjab and neighbouring state buyers can visit our factory to see machines running before purchase.
We are ISO 9001:2015 certified — not just for quality processes but because our machine output consistency is auditable and documented. That certification matters when your customers are OEMs who audit their supply chain.
